Preparing for Hurricane Season 2026

The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November 30.

While forecasts can vary from year to year, one factor remains constant: preparation is essential. Hurricanes cannot be prevented, but proactive planning can help reduce risk, protect your people and property, and limit disruptions to business operations.

How to prepare

Preparation should begin well before a storm is in the forecast. Waiting until a storm is approaching may limit your ability to act effectively.

  • Develop and communicate a clear emergency plan for employees
  • Confirm emergency equipment is accessible and functioning properly
  • Inspect roofs and address necessary repairs
  • Clear gutters and drainage areas to prevent water buildup
  • Secure or remove outdoor items that could become airborne
  • Ensure generator fuel reserves are sufficient
  • Review cargo and property insurance to confirm catastrophic (CAT) coverage aligns to your exposure
  • Establish clear points of contact for claims, where timing is critical
  • Identify materials (plywood, shutters, etc.) needed to protect your facility in advance
  • Supplies to have on hand
    • Plywood, lumber, nails, duct tape, and screws
    • Power and manual tools
    • Tarps or other waterproof coverings
    • Sandbags, shovels, and an ax
    • Flashlights with spare batteries
    • Two-way radios with charged backup batteries
    • Bottled water and non-perishable food
    • Emergency lighting

As a storm approaches

  • Elevate stock, materials, and equipment at least six inches off the ground
  • Relocate critical equipment or documentation when possible
  • Secure portable buildings, trailers, and structures
  • Move outdoor equipment indoors or properly anchor it
  • Install shutters or protective coverings on windows and doors
  • Shut down nonessential equipment ahead of any power loss
  • Turn off electrical or gas services that are not required
  • Protect equipment and inventory with tarps or waterproof coverings

Review your exposures

Hurricane season is an annual risk, but its impact on your organization depends on how well your exposures are understood and managed in advance. Reviewing your coverage, response plans, and risk profile before a storm develops can make a measurable difference in recovery outcomes.
